When the Reaper's Away...

With the shipping expense and space requirements for the Reaper standee, I decided to leave him home for Horror Realm 2010 (not to mention that Empire has a new cover!). But, with no Death to keep them in check...

...the zombies were free to play, and it was one hell of a time! Returning to Pittsburgh to hang out with my fellow writer folks and meet new readers was a wonderful experience. It's one I don't think I can do justice here - a novel in itself - so if you want to know what a con in Zombie Capital USA is all about, get your ass there next year!

The Reaper: Origin

I’m no good with dates, but it must have been late 2005 or early 2006. I was outlining a web serial called Empire, while at the same time working on a couple of ideas to write up & submit to Permuted Press’ second Undead anthology.

One of the ideas I was working on was a “versus” concept. I was trying to come up with the quintessential nemesis for the undead. I think I first considered alien invaders, but I dropped that one quickly. Too sci-fi, and not antithetical enough. From there I thought about having a second virus come along to change some of the zombies, pitting them against one another, but again I wanted a greater contrast. I think I passed on zombies vs. demons too. I thought long and hard about ghosts vs. zombies, but wasn’t sure how to make it work (I’ve since figured it out, and have penned a couple different takes on the concept this year).

I don’t remember how it occurred to me that a zombie’s natural enemy, if the walking dead can have such a thing, must be death itself. Death himself. But it did, and so “Brownlee’s Blue Flame” came about. And when Permuted’s plans for a second Undead grew into plans for a second and third, I was able to place both my stories: “Brownlee” in Flesh Feast, and the genre-bender “The Abbot and the Dragon” in Skin and Bones.

As I said, I was also outlining Empire at that time. It was set in 2112, and the virus had supernatural origins and properties, but the story still didn’t feel unique enough. If I was going to write a novel-length zombie tale, I wanted it to be something that would really surprise zombie devotees. And so I decided to plug the Reaper into the formula. From there Empire blossomed, with a greater potential to blend dark fantasy and hardcore action-horror. And because the story was connected to “Brownlee,” it became connected to “Grinning Samuel” from the first Undead, as well as other stories gestating in my mind. A mythos was growing.

The Reaper of “Brownlee” and Empire starts out as a stoic servant of the cosmos, a mere record-keeper watching life come and go. Over the course of Empire - as he becomes outraged over the dead’s refusal to stay dead, and fearful for the safety of the child Lily – he begins to develop a will and personality all his own.

This arc will continue in the sequel, with the Reaper learning more about his own origins as well as his destiny (things hinted at in the first book). And, while he’s a pretty badass character (how could he not be, tearing across the badlands and cutting down rotters with a scythe?), he is also developing emotionally. In both books, I think that development is key to his badass quotient. Being exposed to anger, fear and pain may just make him even more hardened than he was in his previous station.

In Empire, Death has gone from a spectral bookkeeper to a supernatural outlaw. And he rides a pale horse.

The original "The Reaper"

You were right, Ben...I had to have it!

When I saw that artist Michael Brack was selling the original “The Reaper,” which was used for the cover of Empire’s first edition, Ben Rogers told me that if I wasn’t the one to buy it, I ought to be locked up (or something to that effect – actually, it may have been nothing like that). But he was right nonetheless. So here it is – framed and on display right behind my desk - The Reaper!

Brownlee

Louis Brownlee is another important character whose life, death, and undeath precede Empire. Brownlee was the first zombie Death ever encountered, forcing the Reaper to cross into the living realm and beginning his century-long quest to exterminate the undead.

Brownlee currently appears in "Brownlee's Blue Flame" in my collection, Dark Entities, and The Undead: Flesh Feast; and "Catch-666" in the June/July 2008 issue of NexGen Pulp.

Brownlee died of cancer, and in fact his body still craves the cigarettes that did him in. He is also connected to the origin of the zombie virus - all that, however, will have to wait until the Empire sequel...

But before we go, here's an ode to addiction.

It spread from his lungs to his gut.
Not even death could break his rut.
At brains he won't balk
But this dead man can talk,
And we know he still prefers a butt.

Eviscerato

Eviscerato, the "King of the Dead," is briefly featured in Empire. The former ringmaster of a traveling circus, the now-undead Eviscerato roams the American badlands with his pack of zombified sideshow curiosities. He and his ever-growing legion are the primary antagonists in the Empire sequel.

The circus always draws them in
And the King wears a hideous grin.
When his hunger is spent
He gathers his tent
And sets off after their next of kin.

Grinning Samuel

Of Samuel, clockmaker by trade
Whose rotting corpse began to fade:
With knowledge retained
And indifference to pain,
He forged claws that would not degrade.

Though Grinning Samuel isn’t in Empire, he’s an important character in the Empire universe - one of its oldest, and most unusual, zombies (also my handle in Urban Dead, where I drop by now and then for my recommended intake of vitamin Brains).

A clockmaker most of his life, Samuel never forgot his skill-set. Now, in order to counter his degeneration, the rotter has constructed crude mechanical hands and jaws for himself. Wandering the catacombs beneath a forgotten cemetery, Samuel endures well into the apocalypse, eventually becoming more machine than man. And that’s when he meets the Reaper.

Samuel is featured in stories from The Undead, The Undead: Headshot Quartet, and Zombology. His first appearance was in my first story sale, “Grinning Samuel” from The Undead, which is also featured in a full audio production on Zompod.

The Soldier

In Empire, an elite military unit called "Hand of God" is stationed outside the walls of Jefferson Harbor. While there, they observe the Reaper - and come under fire from an Army deserter who has joined the ranks of the undead.

For a rotter who can shoot, humans seem like easy prey. But this zombie is taking on a group of men and women who've stared Death in the face.

He fled from the fray and his brothers
To save his own neck, per his druthers;
But after the bite
He returned to the fight
To drink from the throats of the others.

Sawbones

Sawbones is one of Empire's "featured" zombies.

If they feed often and well enough, Empire's rotters are capable of retaining certain mental faculties and regenerating tissue. Few zombies, however, are able to achieve this to such a degree as has "Sawbones."

Dressed in blood-spattered scrubs, and with a monstrous dog's skull wired to his mutilated face, this terrifying undead stalks Jefferson Harbor's survivors throughout the novel. What is the secret behind his bizarre appearance? Where does he come from? And where does he take his bloody prizes? Find out in Empire.

New feature: Epitaphs

Epitaphs will be a recurring feature, spotlighting the characters who really rule the Empire – the zombies shambling in and around Jefferson Harbor, the fictional city in which the novel takes place.

Last summer I held a contest at daviddunwoody.com inviting readers to send in limericks about Death. I thought it would be fun to profile the rotters in the same way.

Gene the Trashman

Empire is set in the year 2112. The military are losing in their war against the undead, and have pulled out of Jefferson Harbor, Louisiana. One of the few civilians to stay behind is Gene, who lives at the city landfill. But he’s not long for this world – not with a pulse, anyway – and soon joins the zombie ranks, which leads him to a fateful encounter with the Reaper.

The trashman came down from the mound
But there was no meat to be found.
"Are there no living left?
I can see only Death.
Then from his flesh I'll take my pound."

The Clown

A decades-dead party clown is another of the Harbor’s more colorful inhabitants. His unique appearance is disarming to one of the city’s survivors, and places the rest in jeopardy.

He has that same old painted smile
Over black lips brimming with bile.
And despite his skin woes
He still wears that red nose -
It fools the kids once in a while.
